Is your datacenter FRANKENSTORAGE

Over the last 10-20 years, we have seen the proliferation and sprawl of our IT infrastructure; specialized silos for various workloads. Storage connected to media servers connected to master servers connected to backup targets connected to more storage all supporting different workloads – it’s the definition of “Frankenstorage.”

Almost 100 years ago, the story of Victor Frankenstein was published about a complex creature/monster that was assembled from various “parts.” He is rejected by everyone he encounters, even his own creator. Upon seeing his own reflection, the monster realizes that he too cannot stand to see himself. He is the personification of a “monstrosity.”

Now imagine an archaic data center:

  • OLD technology cobbled together but an over worked IT team
  • COMPLEX infrastructure with idiosyncrasies that can only be explained by the people who work there
  • UNLOVED by even the team who created and maintains the stack daily

If we were to ask Victor Frankenstein to reflect back to his monster-building days and offered to equip him with state-of-the-art “parts,” would his monster have been such a monstrosity? Of course not.

If you could rebuild your secondary storage infrastructure with state-of-the-art technology, would you build Frankenstorage? Highly doubtful.

THERE IS A BETTER WAY

You can avoid the torches and pitchforks from your stakeholders. Avoid missing SLAs and ditch complex backup policies. Embrace consolidation and ease-of-use.

Click to see on the infographic below. Does your secondary storage environment look like Frankenstorage? Do you find all the complexity and maintenance to be monstrosity? As you consider your end-of-year IT budget, consider how you could introduce some simplicity and beauty into your data center.
