Top Moments from AWS re:Invent 2021

For the first time in two years, industry leaders from all over the world gathered in Las Vegas for AWS re:Invent 2021. After attending multiple virtual events from behind a computer screen, re:Invent attendees were finally to attend in-person (with virtual sessions available as well) and hear from product experts about current trends and product roadmaps, while experiencing the latest and greatest in product innovations at the re:Invent Expo.

Key Highlights from Adam Selipsy’s Keynote

AWS re:Invent kicked off with CEO Adam Selipsy taking the stage during the keynote to address several key initiatives for the upcoming year, including:

  • Increased Cloud Security
As more organizations pivot toward digital-first platforms, the use of cloud-native infrastructure has opened the door to cybercriminals and looming ransomware threats. To combat these challenges, AWS announced several new features that automate the detection and management of vulnerabilities across their infrastructure, including enhancements to Amazon Inspector Service which will enable quick detection and remediation to secure cloud workloads.
  • Tailored Vertical Programs Powered by AWS Infrastructure
Almost every industry worldwide has been touched by cloud and many are turning to AWS to help drive further innovation. Nasdaq, a multinational financial services corporation, shared their story of becoming a Software as a Service (SaaS) provider focusing on equities, derivatives, and more. Nasdaq has partnered with AWS since 2008 and is leveraging native services to improve speed, reliability and deliver low latency to customers using the trading platform. Additionally, Nasdaq has moved data distribution, revenue management, regulatory reporting and market operations to AWS and plans to build edge compute zones with AWS Outposts. CEO Adena Friedman stated that the goal is to to become the “first market provider that is 100% cloud-enabled” for the 130 countries that Nasdaq services and supports.
  • Simplified Migration
The pandemic has forced many businesses to rethink their infrastructure strategy, and many are making the move to the cloud to simplify operations and complexity. Yet, migration is not always as easy as it seems, especially when it comes to complex mainframe migrations. To combat these challenges, AWS has announced their Mainframe Modernization Service which drastically reduces migration times and automates the majority of the process by first analyzing the mainframe and providing a recommendation as to whether the best option for migration is refactoring or replatforming.

Ransomware is Top of Mind for Many

Throughout the event, Cohesity was able to be front and center with customers and prospects to drive interesting engagements and discussions. And, it has become clear that battling ransomware and cybercriminals is at the top of everyone’s list.

Cohesity Principal Technologist Theresa Miller led a breakout session early on in the week, where she discussed how to effectively govern data access and detect unauthorized data use. It was no surprise to learn that as cyberattacks occur more often and become more sophisticated, businesses need to be able to easily identify compromised data and recover quickly at scale. And that is where Cohesity comes in, by enabling organizations to take advantage of a next-gen data management platform that protects your business through effective data backup, governance and rapid recovery of key workloads.

Cohesity Vice President of Product Marketing, Chris Wiborg, had an exciting CUBE interview where he discussed how Cohesity is responding to the growing threat of ransomware attacks. Data management is becoming an important component of an organization’s security strategy, and as a result, businesses want to ensure that they have an effective backup and recovery strategy in place. In fact for some organizations, backup and recovery is the second most important initiative on their priority spend list, right behind end-point security. As a result, businesses are seeing a true evolution in the relationship between SecOps and IT Operations teams, who are now working together to prevent ransomware attacks, rather than “playing in parallel” while focusing on their individual charters.
