In order to better serve its population, the district council of Issy-les-Moulineaux has developed 40 business applications to manage education, extracurriculars, nurseries and daycares, as well as technical services, including the management of assets, building works, architecture, urban development, and the civil registry. It also uses horizontal applications, such as the Microsoft Exchange mail system and a file server.
These applications generate a large volume of data. Over the years, the district council of Issy has built up strong IT infrastructure that is constantly growing and changing to meet new needs and comply with legislation. With data volumes increasing at a rate of approximately 20% per year, backup and recovery is a significant challenge.
The district council Issy-les-Moulineaux aimed for the following capabilities in a next-generation backup and recovery solution:
- An easy to deploy and manage solution, allowing fast data recovery
- A scalable solution for next-generation backup and recovery
- Flexible solution for data replication between datacenter locations
- Seamless integration with third-party applications and the cloud
To meet the demands for growing data, additional regulatory requirements, and evolving business needs, the district council of Issy-les-Moulineaux chose Cohesity DataPlatform to implement a solution for secondary or archival data backup, management, verification and visualization. This hyperconverged, scalable solution is ideal to back up traditional and virtualized environments, which are becoming increasingly common in IT infrastructures and have been adopted by the district council of Issy-les-Moulineaux’s IT system.
The city’s complex infrastructure includes a VMware virtualized environment with 220 VMs, hosted on HPE SimpliVity, within Oracle, Linux and Windows environments. Additionally, the city uses a SQL database for its SharePoint and Exchange environments.
To back up these environments, Issy-les-Moulineaux deployed 12 Cohesity C2605 nodes and Cohesity DataProtect and DataPlatform. The entire infrastructure is replicated between two data centers.
We were looking for operational simplification, which led us to choose Cohesity. Not only is the solution easy to deploy and administer, but it also meets our data protection needs. Cohesity provides a powerful and fast data recovery solution, which guarantees a high level of data integrity and availability. With this new infrastructure, our district council has already seen productivity gains, faster reaction times, and increased effectiveness. And in terms of regulations, by indexing our data on the fly, we have become more compliant.”
– Jean-Paul Poggioli, IT Director
Thanks to its compression and deduplication capabilities, Cohesity’s hyperconverged data management solution backs up and seamlessly integrates across all environments and file servers, enabling Issy-les-Moulineaux to reduce space utilization by 50TB.
Now a single admin console is used to manage file saving and recovery, reporting and updates. Cohesity’s solution also supports many different protocols, NAS environments, and offers native support of transferring operations to public cloud environments, such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud.
The city saw immediate results from deploying Cohesity. Soon after initial deployment, the district’s IT team needed to restore a calendar module. This operation was completed within 15 minutes, where previously it would have taken over two hours.
“Cohesity’s system provides more granular data management and indexes saved data in real time. This index simplifies regulatory compliance, since it enables us to find data in archives when required, regardless of file format. Local authorities are operating under increased legal and financial constraints. The safety of our citizens’ data and our services is of the utmost importance. This is why we have chosen innovation to comply with current and future standards for data backup and indexing,” said Jean-Paul Poggioli.
On top of the benefits highlighted already, the district council Issy-les-Moulineaux realized many benefits with Cohesity including:
- Zero-cost test and development, derived from existing backups
- Data recovery is completed in minutes instead of hours
- Stress-free management of increased data volume
- Assurance of meeting regulatory standards for backup files
