SUISA is the cooperative society for composers, lyricists and music publishers in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. As a non-profit organization, SUISA distributes its licensing revenues for its 38,000 members, representing all musical walks of life. SUISA represents the world music repertoire of two million authors in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. It licenses the use of this world repertoire to over 120,000 clients.
SUISA employs a staff of approximately 240 in its offices in Zurich, Lausanne and Lugano and realises an annual turnover of over CHF 160 million. As a not-for-profit organization, SUISA distributes its licensing revenues, net of a cost coverage deduction, to music authors and publishers. More information about SUISA can be found online at www.suisa.ch.
Due to strong growth in the online sector of the music business – primarily via the many streaming services – the amount of data to be stored at SUISA has increased by more than 90 percent in recent years. According to Switzerland’s legal guidelines, the respective financial information must be stored for 10 years. All information concerning royalties must also be archived for up to 70 years after an artist’s death. This means the data on young artists may have to be stored for more than 140 years.
In order to cope with this data growth, a modern backup system was needed with the following requirements:
- Accommodation for exponential data growth of 90% over the last several years
- Reduced administrative effort through automation of as many processes as possible
- Storage consolidation with rapid scalability and cost efficiency
- Reduce times for backup
Before introduction of the Cohesity solution, SUISA used two legacy systems that were not compatible with each other. With respect to security, a strong distinction was made between archiving and backup. In addition, the immense growth in data volume was intended to significantly increase capacity. Neither of the two systems could support this to the extent required.
Cohesity’s main advantages were the possibilities for consolidated backup of primary and secondary data via a uniform management console. In addition, the ability for flexible scalability and high cost efficiency were instrumental. Since the solution also provides support for cloud platforms and is capable of automating many processes, the decision was made easily and quickly to move forward with a Cohesity deployment.
SUISA implemented Cohesity DataPlatform and Cohesity DataProtect, along with Cohesity C2600 nodes with a capacity of 82TB. The installation was fast and the company was in direct contact with Cohesity’s experts for the entire four-month period with excellent service and support. The response time for questions and challenges was always very timely. Since deployment, SUISA has expanded its implementation to a total of four nodes with a capacity of 110TB.
Cohesity’s main advantages are its ability to consolidate data through a unified management console, its flexible scalability and its cost efficiency. Since the solution also supports cloud platforms and can automate many processes, the decision was clear and was made quickly. Cohesity is a reliable solution that can be operated with little effort. The platform convinced us with its simple and fast implementation and integration.“
– Hansruedi Jung, Head of System Technologies, SUISA
Cohesity met all goals for SUISA and the company is seeing great benefits from the next-gen data management solution. The Cohesity solution shortened data backup times from fileservers up to a factor of ten and virtually eliminates the need for administration through largely automated processes. Consolidating from two legacy solutions onto a single web-scale platform created efficiency and cost savings across all operations.
In addition, SUISA was also able to achieve a high degree of automation. For example, as soon as SUISA defines and implements a new virtual server, this server is automatically secured due to the Cohesity policy in place. Previously this had to be managed with a certain amount of manual effort and took considerable time for the IT staff. Operations were greatly simplified by Cohesity, and even employees who were not previously involved in data backup can now perform these tasks quite easily without specialized training.
“When introducing Cohesity, the backup of the virtual server environment had top priority. The new Cohesity system reduced the backup time to just a few hours due to the replacement of legacy backup products with a modern data management solution. Cohesity has been a great selection for SUISA and fully achieved our goals. We’re very happy with the deployment,“ adds Jung.
SUISA manages valuable data, which is often subject to extensive retention obligations. The amount of data to be managed is constantly increasing. Both the more than 38,000 SUISA members, who include authors and publishers of music in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, as well as music users themselves, are increasingly interested in using services online. To do this, the systems must be available around the clock. The innovative Cohesity solution enables this by offering the following advantages:
- Significantly shortened data backup duration
- Fully-automated processes for greater efficiency and time savings
- Significantly reduced administrative costs
- Simplified administrative management
