Enterprises Simplify and Save Resources by Consolidating Files and Object Storage on Cohesity DataPlatform

Manhattan Associates Increases Value of Their Cohesity Deployment by Adding New Workloads and Leveraging Seamless Expansion to the Cloud

San Jose, Calif. – Feb. 14, 2018 – Cohesity, the leader of hyperconverged secondary storage, today announced that customers are expanding the use of its scale-out platform to handle file and object storage along with data protection on the same platform, achieving dramatically lower infrastructure costs and simpler data management. Cohesity DataPlatform’s radically simple and efficient approach to data protection has gained popularity as enterprises grow out of legacy backup solutions that are costly and don’t scale. Now these companies are extending the value of their Cohesity deployment by using it to consolidate their unstructured data across the organization. A growing share of Cohesity customers, such as Manhattan Associates, which started with Cohesity backup capabilities, are now adding file and object storage to seamlessly read and write to the same data volume, eliminating unnecessary data copies and hardware siloes for maximum efficiency and simpler management.

Both the volume and variety of enterprise data continues to grow exponentially. Along with the cost and complexity of traditional enterprise storage, it is putting enormous pressure on businesses to find a better way to manage their exploding data assets. Until recently, enterprise IT handled different use cases with separate storage solutions, each built with its own proprietary hardware, user interface, and licensing model, leading to fragmented data siloes that become operationally inefficient and complex to manage. Cohesity DataPlatform consolidates all secondary storage – that is, any workload that doesn’t require strict service level agreements (SLAs) – including file shares, backups and archiving, logs, media, test/dev and analytics. This enables companies to dramatically simplify their data center and save resources by bringing everything together on a single platform.

Industry Transition to Scale-Out Storage

The enterprise storage industry is shifting from legacy appliances to scale-out platforms. According to a Gartner report “by 2021, more than 80 percent of enterprise data will be stored in scale-out storage systems in enterprise and cloud data centers, up from 30 percent today.”1

The Gartner report goes on to state that “I&O [Infrastructure and Operations] leaders are now looking for distributed scale-out storage products to build new platforms based on software-defined approaches where performance comes from hardware innovation of a commodity hardware layer and data resiliency comes from a scale-out software layer where data is distributed across multiple nodes.”2

Cohesity DataPlatform provides highly efficient, pay-as-you-grow data protection that empowers enterprises to move beyond legacy point backup solutions that don’t scale and eventually require expensive forklift upgrades and manual data migration. Cohesity’s patented web-scale distributed file system, SpanFS, was built from the ground up to handle any secondary storage workload, offering multi-protocol access (NFS, SMB and S3), strict consistency for guaranteed data resiliency, storage efficiency with global deduplication, and global indexing and search. Cohesity’s software-defined solution spans from the edge, to the data center, and to any cloud, allowing enterprises to leverage the economics and flexibility of cloud infrastructure on one seamless platform.

“Unstructured data from an increasing number of sources is rapidly outpacing structured data as the greatest source of storage growth for IT,” said Steven Hill, senior analyst of storage technologies at 451 Research. “Cohesity DataPlatform unifies file, object, and data protection as a seamless model for automating unstructured data control based on visibility, scalability, and policy-based management.”

Cohesity Users Add More Workloads Beyond Backup

Like many Cohesity customers, Manhattan Associates, which provides inventory, supply chain and omni-channel commerce technology, was initially drawn to the power of Cohesity’s data protection capabilities. After trialing, they realized that because Cohesity DataPlatform supports various secondary storage use cases simultaneously, they could add file and object storage on the same platform. In the end, they replaced their legacy backup solution with a distributed platform that combined data protection and file storage, as well as long-term archiving, all within one simple management interface.

“Before Cohesity, we had a complex IT environment that was difficult and expensive to manage,” said Brian Sweeney, principal engineer, Manhattan Associates. “Cohesity hit on all our must-haves and consolidated multiple file use cases and data protection on a single platform that natively integrates with Amazon Web Services for long-term archival, eliminating our dependence on tapes.”

With Cohesity, Manhattan Associates dramatically improved operational efficiency and lowered total cost of ownership for data protection, target storage, and file services. Cohesity CloudTier played a crucial role by allowing the company to quickly provision new datastores while moving inactive cold virtual machines (VMs) to public cloud storage and still keep them fully available to users. Finally, the team eliminated the need to invest in specialized training, which allowed them to achieve an increased operator-to-device ratio, and optimized resources by leveraging Cohesity’s scale-out, pay-as-you-grow model to purchase capacity based on current rather than future needs.
