VCF Automation data protection
(Available as early access)

Protect and recover modern private cloud workloads on VMware Cloud Foundation Automation (VCFA).

Top 3 customer needs

Broadcom is consolidating its private cloud portfolio around VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), and VCF Automation now supersedes both VMware Cloud Director and Aria Automation as the self-service layer enterprises and service providers use to deliver private cloud infrastructure. As organizations move onto VCF 9, data protection has to move with them. VCF has no built-in backup of its own, and the platform's shift to a Supervisor-managed, multi-tenant model means recovery must do more than restore a VM.

Seamless Data Protection for VCD to VCFA Workload Migration

Recovery That Understands My Environment

Unified Platform

“I'm migrating workloads from VCD to VCFA and I can't afford a gap in protection while that migration is happening."

“When I recover a VM, I need it back in the right Organization, Project, and Namespace — not just restored, but usable.”

“I run traditional vSphere VMs and modern VCF Automation workloads side by side. I don't want to use point data protection solutions for each.”

VCF Automation data protection addresses these needs

Available now as an Early Access capability in Cohesity DataProtect 7.4.1, Cohesity's VCF Automation adapter is purpose-built for VCF 9's supervisor-based architecture. Here is how it meets the needs above, starting with protection that understands how VCF Automation is organized.

Protection built for VCF Automation's architecture

  • Registers VCF Automation as a data protection source and discovers its multi-tenant hierarchy of Organizations, Projects, and Namespaces — the same structure tenants and providers already use to run their environment.
  • Backs up modern VM service workloads running on the VCF Automation Supervisor, capturing VM configuration, disk data, and Kubernetes state in a single, consistent operation.
  • Runs alongside Cohesity's existing support for traditional vSphere VMs via vCenter — one platform for both traditional vSphere VMs and modern VCF workloads, instead of a separate tool for each.

Recovery that preserves context

  • Automatically rejoins recovered VMs to the VCF Automation control plane in the correct namespace and tenant context — the VM is fully usable with no manual re-registration required
  • Supports original-location recovery, copy recovery, and file/folder download
  • Roadmap:
    • Instant recovery
    • Granular file/folder recovery
    • Vaulting
    • Clean room recovery
    • Native protection for VMware Kubernetes Services (VKS) clusters, container pods, Volume Service, and Private AI Service

A data protection path through the platform transition

  • Broadcom has stated VMware Cloud Director will reach end of support around mid-2027, so organizations need a protection strategy that keeps pace with the move to VCF Automation
  • Early Access is available now in Cohesity DataProtect 7.4.1, so customers can start protecting VCF 9 workloads without waiting on a multi-phase roadmap.
