NetBackup Flex Appliance 8.0: Recovery you can rehearse

Flex 8.0 helps you check that recoveries are clean, keep backup performance steady as workloads grow, and catch appliance issues before they become outages.

Cohesity flex images

Many Cohesity NetBackup customers have standardized on NetBackup Flex Appliances for their combination of speed, security, and simplicity. We are always working to bring steady improvements to Flex users across all of these areas. New capabilities in Flex 8.0 are focused on improved recovery readiness and confidence: knowing the recovery is clean, knowing performance will hold, and knowing the platform is healthy before you need it.

Let’s examine these in detail and learn why upgrading should be a priority.

Know the recovery is clean before you run it

With Flex 8.0, malware scanning runs directly on the Flex appliance. Recovery images are assessed on the same hardened, immutable platform that protects them—without moving them to a separate scan host.

For security leaders, this removes a quiet source of risk and cost. Today, scanning backup images typically means standing up a separate scan host: another system to procure, harden, certify, patch, and defend. It also adds a hop, moving images out to the scanner and back, every time you want assurance before a restore. Bringing the scan onto the appliance eliminates the extra infrastructure and shortens the path to a clean recovery.

Flex 8.0 also adds Internet Protocol Security (IPsec) for connections between the appliance and systems where a NetBackup client isn't installed, such as Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) and Direct Network Attached Storage (DNAS) backups. This helps protect data moving through agentless backup environments without relying solely on separate network-layer encryption.

Know performance will hold on day 1,000 and beyond, not just day one

Backup SLAs rarely fail on install day. They fail 18 months later, when a new workload lands on an appliance and quietly shares storage with a critical job that used to finish on time. The symptom shows up as backups drifting out of their window. The cause is hard to see.

Flex 8.0 makes storage visible and controllable. Administrators can see how storage maps to each application instance, move capacity where it's needed, and dedicate storage to a priority workload so nothing added later competes with it. Flex 7.0 gave customers this kind of control over CPU and memory. In 8.0 we extend it to storage.

The outcome for the business is predictability: the recovery window you commit to in a resilience plan is one your platform can keep as the environment grows.

Know the platform is healthy before you need it

A recovery plan assumes the recovery platform works. Flex 8.0 adds a health dashboard and in-console diagnostics so teams see appliance health at a glance, run checks themselves, and catch issues early rather than during an incident. When support is needed, the diagnostic data is already in hand, which shortens time to resolution.

For operations leaders, this is fewer tickets and less firefighting. For resilience leaders, it's one less assumption in the plan.

Guardrails for an AI-connected future

As organizations connect automation and AI tooling to their data protection infrastructure, proper credential hygiene is a must. Flex 8.0 introduces location-aware API tokens: access is granted only when a valid token is presented from an approved network location. A stolen token used from the wrong place is simply blocked. It's a straightforward rule that limits the damage of credential compromise without slowing legitimate automation.

What this means for your resilience program

Flex 8.0 doesn't ask you to buy a new platform or change how your teams back up and recover. It makes the platform you already trust more rehearsable, more predictable, and more observable. Put differently, it turns your Minimum Viable Company from a plan you hope will work into a capability you can prove.

NetBackup Flex 8.0 is available October 19.
