AWS: re:Invent highlights

Key themes include: generative AI, cyber resilience, and retrieval augmented generation.

A learning conference dedicated to builders and developers, AWS: re:Invent 2024 featured keynotes, innovative talks, and hands-on labs. AWS said 50,000+ people attended, and another 400,000 watched online.

Three quick things to know:

  1. I was one of those who made the trip—this was my first re:Invent.
  2. As a former Amazonian, it was great to be there and reconnect with familiar faces.
  3. Cohesity was named 2024 AWS Global Storage Partner of the Year!

I’d like to share a few highlights that I think you need to know about. Spoiler alert—get ready to read about generative AI, cyber resilience, and retrieval augmented generation AI.

AWS re:Invent keynote takeaways

Before we double click into some of the major themes from the conference, let’s check out a few keynote headlines:

Check out the links above if you want more details from those keynotes.

Cohesity highlights at AWS re:Invent

Cohesity hosted sessions throughout the week, including ones with NVIDIA and SimonMed Imaging. Greg Statton led the session with NVIDIA on how Cohesity integrates with NVIDIA NIM (NeMo Retriever Microservices) to enhance generative AI capabilities for AI management. This collaboration allows organizations to query their backup data using an AI assistant, enabling them to gain valuable business insights. (Watch the video session below.)

I led the session with SimonMed, discussing how they use AWS and Cohesity to meet their cyber resilience goals. SimonMed regularly assesses its cyber resilience plans to ensure that recovery time objectives (RTOs) are realistic and that their systems can recover rapidly without compromising data integrity. (Watch the video session below.)

Cohesity also presented mini theater sessions highlighting the Cohesity Cyber Event Response Team (CERT), clean rooms, and collaborative partnerships with organizations like AWS.

Generative AI and Amazon EC2 highlights

One session covered the recent enhancements added to Amazon EC2, which you can use to run workloads, including generative AI. The presenters provided a brief history of Amazon EC2, discussed its new features and capabilities, and explained how to manage workloads using the platform. I also learned about the new Amazon EC2 instance types recently added to the AWS cloud computing platform. These instance types are virtual machines that combine CPU, memory, storage, and networking capacity, allowing you to select the appropriate mix of resources for your applications. Each instance type includes multiple instance sizes, enabling you to scale your resources according to your workload requirements.

AWS also introduced new Amazon EC2 instance types (Trn2 and P5en) designed for machine learning, deep learning, generative AI, and high-performance computing workloads. They have also optimized storage performance with the Amazon EC2 I8g instances, which are critical for intensive I/O workloads. AWS periodically releases new instance types, providing the community access to the latest hardware and cost-efficient options, which can help save money while achieving better results.

What makes AWS re:Invent so special

AWS CEO Matt Garman summed up what makes re:Invent so special: “…bringing together the passionate, energetic AWS community to learn from each other.” As a technology professional, I value the chance to learn, collaborate, and share knowledge with the broader community.
