VMware Cloud on AWS enables this journey and helps deliver a seamless hybrid cloud environment by extending your on-premises vSphere environment to the AWS Cloud. In fact, a December 2017 survey by Cowen and Company found as many as 64 percent of VMware customers are planning to deploy VMware Cloud on AWS within 12 months! The need for an enterprise-grade backup, recovery, and long-term retention solution for VMware Cloud (VMC) on AWS couldn’t be greater.
This is where Cohesity comes in: With Cohesity, you can get an enterprise-grade solution to backup, recovery, and long-term retention for VMware on AWS. Once Cohesity Data Cloud is deployed in your VMC software defined data center hosted on AWS, Cohesity can be used to protect VM workloads running in VMC.
Additionally, Cohesity CloudArchive capabilities can be leveraged for long-term retention to Amazon S3 and Glacier. You can also benefit from the same user-friendly interface for managing backup of VMware environment on-premises and on AWS.
An alternate solution approach is to use Cohesity DataPlatform Cloud Edition running in AWS and using that to backup and recover workloads in VMC. Amazon S3 and Glacier can be leveraged for long-term retention. The workflows discussed below benefit from the same user-friendly interface across both Virtual Edition and Cloud Edition.
Backup and Recovery
Cohesity DataPlatform Virtual Edition helps in the backup and recovery of data for VMC. Key capabilities in this use case include auto-protect that enables automated detection and protection of new VMware workloads that are added to VMC SDDC. Recovery workflows such as full VM restores, guest OS files, and folder recovery can also be implemented.
For long-term retention you can archive backups of VMs to Amazon S3 and Amazon Glacier with CloudArchive. A key differentiator and benefit is that global deduplication and compression in the Cohesity DataPlatform can also potentially help optimize the cost of your cloud storage.
